As I mentioned in the subject line, this was copied and pasted from my response to clauderainsrm as to why I feel unable to participate in the 20th anniversary of LJ Idol despite being invited to:
I totally would love to participate, having been in the first LJ Idols back in ye old LiveJournal days. However...
These days, things are a little difficult for me.
First off, work/life balance is a bit off for me at the moment. Work has gotten a lot busier, and I am one of three managers of my very busy dental practice (and after having worked there for 36 years, I am still hoping to retire from there) and there just never seems to be enough time in the day to get everything done that needs to get done. I find myself working a lot of evenings and weekends, and now that I can sort of semi work from home, I do that, but -- it's still working. And that does take a lot away from my spare time. (Spare time? What the hell IS that, anyway? Is there such a thing? Not really in my world.
Secondly, and you likely already are aware of this, I almost died several times in 2024 and was a medical mystery for a while (still sort of am). But after 8 ER visits, 4 near-misses of almost dying of hypovolemic shock, 30 blood transfusions, and confounding an entire team of gastroenterologists and two hospitals as well as a hematologist and her PA, I am finally on a regimen of every 28 days receiving a lifesaving injection of Octreotide that keeps my small intestine from just randomly popping open and spewing blood into me. I was initially diagnosed with acute symptomatic anemia without etiology and then finally, after countless endoscopies, colonoscopies, double and triple balloon enteroscopy surgeries and pill cameras down my gullet, they finally found what the actual issue is - arteriovenous malformations in my small intestine. Not just in one place, either. I have bled from my jejunum, my ileum, and other apparent random places in my small bowel. It is a chronic condition of which there is no known etiology. One ER doctor told me that I was likely born with it, but it only just now after fifty-some-odd years manifesting. Other potential causes have been speculated - the COVID vaccine, actually *having* COVID, the fact that I used Ozempic for years for my diabetes, etc. There just isn't any way to confirm the reason for this condition. But I am stuck with it, and since it didn't take me out despite numerous attempts in 2024 and once earlier this year when we started playing with the injection timelines, I have survived and I have to stay on top of it to continue to stay out of the hospital and keep living. I have alternately felt very blessed and quite cursed at the same time. However, everything is relative, and it is a lot more pleasant to simply be grateful for life as opposed to pissed off that I am saddled with this medical issue for the rest of my life, however long it may be.
Having written all of that, a side effect of this is a lot of medical/doctor visits and occasional iron IV infusions, both of which eat up a lot of time, and another being very, very tired all of the time. When my hemoglobin was under 6, everything felt like trying to climb Mt. Everest. Now, I'm keeping my hemoglobin WNL but struggling to keep my iron levels up. Having low iron, i.e. anemia, is also something that makes one pretty tired, so I basically live my life in a state of exhaustion most of the time. Luckily, it's not like climbing Mt. Everest-I've experienced that enough to be incredibly grateful that I can actually function and walk around and do normal things. I just have to be aware that I do have a limited amount of spoons as compared to others, and I need to be vigilant about not trying to overdo anything on a daily basis because I need spoons for work and to function, and there are very little left over for anything else.
So, long story short (TL:DR), I just don't have the time or energy to devote to this endeavor, as much as I would like to.
I will try as best I can to follow along, but even that could be stretching things.
I do wish all of the competitors the best of luck and true enjoyment from the creative process this brings. Huzzah!
